In support of the current revitalization of downtown Hartford, Trumbull on the Park provides much-needed housing, parking and retail on a park-front downtown corner of the historic Lewis Street district. The project transformed a vacant lot, an eyesore in the city’s central business district, into a pedestrian-oriented, residential setting which offers tenants an affordable luxury lifestyle in close proximity to Hartford’s thriving cultural and business center. The development is attractive both to young professionals and “empty nesters” seeking to downsize from their suburban dwellings.
Bounded by Pearl, Lewis and Trumbull Streets, the project is located at one of the major points of entry into downtown Hartford: Trumbull Street at the northeast gate of Bushnell Park. The program is composed of a nine story apartment structure containing 88 units with Park views; an eleven level 600 space parking structure serving the residents and transient needs; and the restoration of 12 apartments in two historic residential buildings from the 19 th and early twentieth centuries.
The Lewis Street historic buildings were design inspiration for Trumbull Centre. They had, however fallen into severe disrepair. Their restoration and preservation were critical to the overall success of the project and were thus undertaken at great expense. We worked closely with the Connecticut Historical Commission to preserve the brick facades of two buildings on the site that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Service, retail shops and restaurantsline the ground floor along Trumbull Street with a restaurant opening to a new outdoor pocket café facing Bushnell Park. Additionally, an inner court which acts to provide service access was developed with pavements and plantings to become an amenity to the residents.
