Residential facilities -- residence halls, dining facilities
and student centers -- make up over 50% of the buildings on American
college and university campuses. In considering the future of this
important building type: whether to build new, renovate, or both;
how to integrate the academic mission with the responsibility of
providing a high quality of residential life; -- it is critical
to consider the role of successful architectural planning, programming,
and design.
HSNP has conducted Residential Facilities Master Plan Studies for
school and university campuses across the country. Each study is
customized to meet the unique needs and circumstances of the individual
institution.
The study analyzes existing residential facilities' performance
in terms of how well they continue to serve their programmatic missions
and it develops flexible design and planning strategies to address
any deficiencies encountered. At the same time our firm evaluates
the physical condition and level of code compliance in all the facilities
in order to rate them quantitatively, based on greatest renovation
need.
Together with the information developed regarding programmatic need,
we develop a project sequence coordinated with available capital
resources that will "roll-out" the renovations to the institution's
colleges and dormitories over the long term in the most cost-effective
manner.
Recognizing the growing need for similar services on college and
university campuses nation-wide, HSNP offers the annual symposium
Architecture in Residence.
