The Loomis Chaffee School
Windsor, Connecticut
(Phase II) 65,000 (New) 35,000 (Renovated)
Herbert
S. Newman and Partners has designed and built a phased master plan for the expansion and
renovation of The Loomis Chaffee School’s athletic facilities. The program
calls for 65,000 square feet of new construction and the renovation of 35,000
square feet in existing buildings. Major new program elements include a double
gymnasium which also serves as a 900 seat all school “amphitheater”
meeting space for a verity of events; six new squash courts, a fitness center,
weight training and exercise rooms, a wrestling room, expanded locker rooms,
and support spaces.
The master plan knits together existing campus buildings to create a revitalized
athletic center. A new courtyard has been placed on axis with the central campus
quadrangle, extending the plan of the original campus. A new main entrance and
rotunda organize the circulation system of the athletic complex. A new entry
to the athletic fields links the double gymnasium and renovated natatorium,
creating a “garden wall” edging the playing fields.
