Hobart and William Smith Colleges
Scandling Student Center

60,000 square feet with a 550 seat dining hall
The
design mitigates the massive scale of an existing library that overwhelmed the
sensitive Flemish Revival architecture of neighboring buildings. Our insertion
acts as a bridge, perceptually linking these diverse elements and creating a
public outdoor common space within a new campus precinct by utilizing the fundamental
architectural elements of structure, hierarchy, light, and path.
Strategically located midway between a men's campus and a women's campus, Scandling
Student Center is the central meeting point of Hobart and William Smith colleges.
It has a multitude of student uses, including dining spaces, recreation rooms,
seminar rooms, club facilities, a coffee shop and cafe, study lounges, student
offices, the campus post office, and a smaller, 150-seat faculty dining room
in the adjacent Humphrey Building.
