Student Living Center
Continuing
our ideas of making communities of dormitories, the design attempts to nurture
students by engaging them in interaction with one another through path, portal,
entry and space.
The Student Living Center at the Eastman School of Music is at the heart of
the University or Rochester's cultural center, at Eastman Place facing McKim,
Mead and White's Eastman Theater. Home to the students of the music school,
it has a dining hall, a small recital hall, common spaces, recreation rooms,
student activity rooms, a snack bar, squash courts, and administrative offices.
Derived from the quadrangle style of the collegiate architecture of Oxford,
Cambridge and Yale, The Student Center has a large central courtyard that acts
as an outdoor living room, a place where students can traverse through or choose
to linger unselfconsciously. Dormitory rooms in the tower rising above the courtyard
are identified with portals and clustered into houses arranged vertically.
